There’s no denying that Baldur’s Gate 3 stole the spotlight in 2023, claiming not only the title of Game of the Year but also earning its place as one of the most outstanding RPGs—and video games—in recent times. What Larian Studios has delivered is a masterpiece that you can jump into and thoroughly enjoy without needing to tweak a single setting.
Yet, isn’t there a touch more excitement in shaking things up? Imagine crafting your character with a peculiar nod to Shrek or sneaking Thomas the Tank Engine into the gameplay mix. The real thrill often lies in bending the game’s rules and mechanics to suit your whims—or adopting the creative whims of modders who’ve beaten you to it.
Interestingly, mods have found their way onto consoles, a commendable feat by Larian. However, despite their expertise, they haven’t managed to conjure full-scale wizardry, meaning there are still some limits to what’s possible with mods on these platforms.
In a recent video discussion on this topic, Aoife Wilson, a senior communications developer at Larian, shed light on some constraints. The studio is currently facing a ceiling on the number of mods that can coexist on a console save file without hindering the game’s performance.
As it stands, players on consoles can activate up to 100 mods per save file. This is crucial information for those navigating cross-saves between a PC and console. If your PC save has more than 100 mods running, you’ll hit a roadblock when trying to load it on your console—at least for now, according to Larian.
For mod creators, particularly those developing for both PC and console users, there’s an entire submission process to navigate to get your mods console-ready, as Wilson elaborates.
So, while the modding world on consoles is expanding, some boundaries remain that enthusiasts and creators alike need to keep in mind.
