Real Heroes: Firefighter has transitioned to the PlayStation 5, now boasting some exciting enhancements. Dive into our review of Real Heroes: Firefighter HD to find out more!
In its latest iteration, Real Heroes: Firefighter makes a bold leap onto the PlayStation 5, bringing with it some noteworthy improvements. Ziggurat Interactive had previously introduced the game to PlayStation 4, closely mirroring the Nintendo Wii experience. However, this time it’s been beautifully upgraded for the PS5, supporting vivid 4K graphics and utilizing the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback in brilliant new ways. Stepping into the boots of a rookie cadet, you’ll find yourself amidst the action in Los Angeles, tasked with not only rescuing civilians from raging infernos but also ensuring the safety of your fellow firefighters. The game has pulled in some reputable voice talent including James Marsters from “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” Jack McGee from “Rescue Me,” Michael Jace from “The Shield,” Jamie Kennedy from “Ghost Whisperer,” and Jenette Goldstein from “Aliens.”
The first-person perspective of Real Heroes: Firefighter HD immerses you directly into the action. Navigating through fiery situations is intuitive – move your character with the left analog stick and look around with the right. Sprinting is possible by holding down the L2 button, though it does limit your ability to use equipment. A simple press of the X button allows you to interact with the environment. With the R2 button, you can grab and wield a fire extinguisher to suppress flames, an essential skill in your firefighting arsenal.
Switching tools is seamlessly done using the D-Pad. Encounter a locked door? Equip your trusty axe to break it down, or clear away any debris blocking your path. For doors requiring more effort, the halligan tool is indispensable, letting you pry them open and tackle other stubborn obstacles.
The hose is a critical piece of your toolkit for tackling fires head-on. By pressing in on the right analog stick, you can switch to the fog nozzle to handle close-up fire threats. Be aware of your hose range; the hose icon will blink if you’re about to exhaust your hose line. Should you exceed the hose’s limit, seeking a replacement or improvising with available tools will be necessary. Fire extinguishers should be reserved for dire needs or specific objectives, such as pursuing the game’s Platinum trophy—more on that later!
Facing dense smoke? You’ll need to crouch by clicking the left analog stick to conserve air, a crucial survival tactic. When near a firefighter or civilian in need, you’ll notice a prompt for a call-out action. Hit the Square button and follow the sound to locate them! If they’re unable to move, you’ll have to carry them to safety, sacrificing the ability to use tools during that process.
Your toolkit doesn’t end there. A hydraulic spreader can be invaluable, allowing you to pry open car doors during a rescue. Line it up with the X button and activate it with R2, making sure to reset it with L2 for subsequent uses.
The rotary saw, a robust tool for cutting through barriers, requires you to aim with the left analog stick while rotating it using the right. By holding the R2 button, you’ll start cutting along your designated path, guided by a training overlay that shows you precise cutting lines and directions.
Regarding trophies, fans of the original Real Heroes: Firefighter will find a familiar challenge, with the PlayStation 5 version offering a coveted Platinum trophy. The trophy list includes 10 Bronze, 9 Silver, and 6 Gold trophies for various achievements. From completing the tutorial, navigating each level, to battling through all difficulty levels, acquiring special equipment, locating hidden fire cause determination medals, and more, there’s plenty to keep you engaged.
