Exciting news for Pokémon Go fans: the highly anticipated Unova Tour event has just introduced a thrilling new feature. For the first time, the legendary Pokémon, “White Kyurem” and “Black Kyurem” from Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, will be making their grand entrance into the Pokémon Go universe. As part of the celebrations for Pokémon’s fifth generation, these Ice/Dragon-type legends will debut at special in-person events in Los Angeles and New Taipei City from February 21 to 23, before launching globally on March 1 and 2.
For trainers eager to catch them, you’ll need to tackle Black and White Kyurem in challenging raid battles at the second-highest difficulty level. Successfully completing these raids will earn you “Volt Fusion Energy” to create Black Kyurem or “Blaze Fusion Energy” for White Kyurem. This mechanic might sound familiar as it echoes last summer’s Pokémon Go Fest, where players used similar energy types to create “Dusk Mane Necrozma” and “Dawn Wings Necrozma”. To create the fused Pokémon, you’ll need a Kyurem and either Zekrom or Reshiram, with Kyurem’s stats and potential shiny status influencing the outcome. If your Kyurem knows the move Glaciate, merging it with Zekrom will result in Black Kyurem learning “Freeze Shock”, while fusing with Reshiram will teach “Ice Burn”. We’re currently waiting on confirmation from Niantic about whether Glaciate will be a standard feature for Kyurem caught during the event.
Although the fusion energy is primarily awarded to those attending the in-person events, players worldwide can still join these raids through “remote raids” up to five times per day during the weekend. However, only local participants will receive the energy required for these fusions.
Adding another layer of excitement, the legendaries you capture will flaunt special backgrounds on their status screens, inspired by Pokémon Black and White. Reshiram will feature a Pokémon Black-themed background, Zekrom will sport a Pokémon White-themed one, and Kyurem may possess either. Interestingly, when you fuse Pokémon with different backgrounds (like a Zekrom with a Black-themed Kyurem), you’ll unlock a unique, exclusive background for the resulting Pokémon.
