The team at Stress Level Zero has really hit it out of the park with the success of BONELAB (2022) on the Quest platform. However, fans have been eagerly waiting for BONEWORKS (2019), their acclaimed physics-driven action puzzler, to make its debut on Meta’s latest standalone devices. Well, it seems that wait is nearly over.
For those not in the know, BONEWORKS is a thrilling narrative-driven VR adventure that leans heavily into sophisticated physics mechanics. It’s not for the faint-hearted, with its intense gameplay requiring you to move dynamically through environments, tackle physics-laden combat scenarios, and solve puzzles using the world’s physical rules.
Brandon Laatsch, one of the studio’s co-founders, took to X recently to share some exciting plans for 2025. He revealed that the team is not only busy creating patches for their Marrow Engine—a custom physics framework developed for the Unity engine—but they’re also pushing to launch Boneworks for the Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
Laatsch’s post included a preview of Boneworks running on Quest 3, stating: “Goals for ’25 include releasing Patches 7, 8, 9 for Bonelab with Marrow 2, 2.1, and 2.2. We aim to bring Boneworks to Quest 3 using Marrow 2, alongside starting pre-production on our next game. By linking Marrow, we strive for compatibility. Though Boneworks is our closest kin, it’s still a tough nut to crack. Godspeed, SLZ!”
One of the noteworthy updates from Laatsch’s announcement is that developments for Marrow’s 2.0 iteration and Boneworks on Quest 3 are proceeding simultaneously, all while kicking off plans for a brand-new game.
Interestingly enough, Quest users with a bit of technical savvy have already been enjoying Boneworks on Quest 2 and up, thanks to an impressive free mod by the community called ‘Labworks.’
What’s more, Laatsch assured fans the team has no intention of taking down Labworks—remarkably, an indie modder known as ‘volx64’ spent two years bringing it to life. However, Laatsch hints that the Marrow Engine will offer far more than a mere port for the Quest 3 version, promising a deeper transformation.
As for when all this will land, no concrete release date just yet. We’re keeping a close watch on Laatsch’s X updates and the latest from Stress Level Zero’s YouTube channel.
