Although we haven’t gotten an official confirmation yet, there’s quite the buzz about an Oblivion remake, and it’s expected to bring about some exciting changes to gameplay. If you’re planning to jump back into The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to snag those achievements on what seems to be its Xbox RPG remake, you might be in for a treat with improved archery, blocking, hit reactions, a revamped HUD, sneaking mechanics, and stamina systems.
Rumors hint at enhancements in the Oblivion remake
Talk of an Oblivion remake has been circulating for a while, but a recent report has reignited these speculations. It claims that this remake, presumably improving on several gameplay systems such as blocking and archery, might just be the real deal. According to the latest chatter, it’s not just an upgrade but a full remake. The rumor mill buzzes with a new update from MP1st, citing a former Virtuos employee’s portfolio appearing to confirm the remake’s existence. This employee allegedly worked on the Oblivion project from 2023 to 2024 and has also been associated with titles like Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Call of Duty: Warzone. The site description reportedly reveals that Virtuos is tapping Unreal Engine 5 for this ambitious project, aiming to overhaul various gameplay features of the classic game.
Supposedly, the archery in the game will feel more contemporary, with enhancements to both first-person and third-person perspectives. Virtuos is drawing inspiration from Souls-like games to revamp the blocking system. Players and NPCs can expect more realistic hit reactions, and a redesigned HUD is on the cards to make the interface more attractive and intuitive for newcomers. In terms of sneaking, the icons are getting a makeover, and damage calculations should be more precise. Additionally, the difficulty of getting knocked down due to low stamina is being tweaked for a better balance.
This remake is apparently being developed for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC, utilizing a “pairing system” that merges the advanced visuals rendered in Unreal Engine 5 with the original Oblivion engine for gameplay and physics.
Initially, there were whispers that the Oblivion remake might debut at the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct on January 23, 2025. However, current indications point towards a different unveiling—a new installment from a major Japanese franchise.
