With 2025 brimming with an exciting variety of blockbuster movies, both big and small, the kickoff at Super Bowl LIX on February 9 promises to be a cinematic spectacle. Fans can look forward to the powerhouse presence of franchises like Jurassic World: Rebirth and Marvel Studios, which will undoubtedly lead the charge, but they might just be the beginning of an avalanche of surprises.
According to Deadline, in the wake of a quieter 2024 theatrical lineup caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, this year is gearing up to deliver quite the cinematic punch. It seems we’re in for a lot of treats.
If we look back at the previous year’s Super Bowl, it was a marketing goldmine for tentpole films like Deadpool & Wolverine and Wicked, which raked in $211.4 million and $112.5 million at their US box office debuts. Not only did they score big stateside, but their total global earnings reached the awe-inspiring heights of $1.33 billion and $717.6 million, respectively. With the film industry gradually picking up steam post-pandemic and this year’s release calendar packed to the brim, it’s no wonder the big studios are ready to make some hefty moves.
It’s hardly surprising that Disney has a stacked lineup on its hands. Movies such as Snow White (hitting theaters on March 21), Lilo & Stitch (landing May 23), and Pixar’s Elio (premiering June 13) may all make an appearance, with Lilo & Stitch particularly due for a full trailer reveal.
This year also marks a pivotal moment for Marvel Studios’ MCU, especially after last year’s resurgence with Deadpool & Wolverine. With Captain America: Brave New World set for a February 14 release, it might just get some extra push with a major promo spot. Then we’ve got titles like Thunderbolts slated for May 2, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which won’t hit screens until July 25 but still hasn’t debuted a trailer. Rumor has it Marvel will showcase two of these films, so start making your predictions.
Universal Pictures is gearing up to dazzle with sneak peeks at their live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon (out June 13) and Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic World: Rebirth, arriving on July 2. While we haven’t yet caught a glimpse of those iconic dinosaurs in action, the buzz from director Edwards and veteran Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp suggests something spectacular lies ahead.
With Sony, Warner, Netflix, Amazon MGM Studios, and Lionsgate sitting this one out, there’s curious anticipation around Warner Bros.’ approach. Given the loaded July schedule, you might expect a push for James Gunn’s Superman, set to premiere on July 11, but consistent with their past, WB isn’t joining in this year’s Super Bowl festivities.
Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures is keeping up their usual tradition with plans for trailers for the Jack Quaid comedy-thriller Novocaine (dropping March 14), the Rihanna-starred Smurfs animated musical (arriving July 18), and the much-anticipated Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning. The latter, potentially Tom Cruise’s farewell to the franchise, is bound to get special attention, and perhaps Cruise himself might make an appearance for an extra dose of excitement.
Be prepared for the onslaught of movie teasers and trailers during the Super Bowl broadcast, likely making their way to YouTube and social media almost immediately. And who knows, we might catch some snippets in the week leading up to the big game.
