The Icosa Foundation, renowned for its work on the open-source adaptation of Google’s Tilt Brush called Open Brush, has taken another impressive step. They’ve just launched a Quest-compatible version of Google’s low-poly 3D modeling application, Blocks.
This new release, aptly named Open Blocks, echoes the straightforward interface of its predecessor. It enables creators to craft low-poly 3D designs in virtual reality with ease. Although Open Blocks was initially accessible only through PC VR headsets on Steam, it’s now available for free in the Horizon Store for Quest 2 and up.
Open Blocks stands out with several key features. It offers compatibility across both PC VR and standalone VR platforms, thanks to OpenXR support. Designed with a focus on producing low-poly assets, it’s perfect for tasks ranging from game development to prototyping. The tools are streamlined, promising a smooth and immersive modeling experience.
The Icosa Foundation first introduced Open Blocks for PC VR users soon after Google made Blocks’ code open source in July 2024. This launch marked a revival for Blocks, which hadn’t seen updates from Google for nearly a year since its original debut in 2017.
Looking ahead, the foundation plans to integrate support for the Icosa Gallery—a modern alternative to Google Poly—which will allow users to share their creations online seamlessly. They’re also developing features like MR passthrough mode, glTF importing capability, a wider range of base shapes, and a more versatile color palette.
“This will be instrumental in unlocking Open Blocks’ full potential for asset creation and remixing,” the studio states. Their long-term vision includes evolving Open Blocks into a comprehensive modeling suite, complete with enhanced material control, texturing capabilities, and more robust tools sourced from traditional CSG processes.
In addition, the foundation intends to expand support to other platforms, such as Pico XR headsets, in upcoming releases. To get the most out of Open Blocks, users can visit the app’s official website, which provides a detailed guide on tools, controls, and instructions for importing and exporting assets.
