Nightdive Studios has exciting news for fans of System Shock 2. They’ve announced that System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition is getting a name change and is now known as System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. On top of this, the remaster is heading to the Nintendo Switch, expanding its horizons beyond PC and other consoles.
Announced back in August 2019, System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition was supposed to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary. Unfortunately, the wait has been longer than expected, stretching out six years. But now, there are signs of progress, keeping the promise alive, albeit later than fans had hoped.
In February 2025, Nightdive updated us with a fresh title for the remaster and added the Switch to its list of launch platforms. Interestingly, this release will mark the debut of any System Shock game on a Nintendo console. The new name, System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster, fits perfectly as it prepares to play on future Nintendo hardware as well, including the backward-compatible Switch 2.
The anticipation is building as Nightdive also plans to reveal the game’s release date during the Game Developers Conference in March 2025. This event runs from March 17 to 22, and System Shock 2’s release date announcement is set for the Future Game Show Spring Showcase on March 20. With this schedule, a 2025 release seems likely, bringing it closer to the 26th rather than the 25th anniversary of the original.
Despite the long wait, the reasons behind the extensive development period remain unclear. Modern game development is notoriously unpredictable, and Nightdive has not been idle. In 2024 alone, they released five other remasters — an impressive feat for a team of around 40, according to LinkedIn.
Apart from the Switch, the remaster will also release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Pricing has yet to be disclosed. Much like the original game from 1999, this remaster is anticipated to draw in fans who love immersive sims and horror games with RPG elements.
System Shock 2 has always held a special place in gaming history, and this remaster aims to rekindle that legacy for a new generation of players across various platforms. Whether you experienced the classic first-hand or you’re diving in for the first time, there’s much to look forward to with the enhanced relaunch on the horizon.
