In a thrilling announcement that has fans buzzing with excitement, the Korean studio Pixelity revealed its ambitious project: developing an XR game inspired by the iconic ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. They’ve secured an official licensing agreement with Studio Khara in Japan, setting the stage for an exciting adaptation of the beloved series.
Pixelity shared in a recent blog post that the game will unfold across three parts, capturing the essence of all 26 episodes of the anime. With the first installment already in the works, they’re aiming for a 2026 release. As fans of Evangelion ourselves, we know just how groundbreaking this series was. It didn’t just boost anime’s popularity in the ’90s; it became a cultural touchstone that inspired countless other series.
The anime sets its gripping tale in 2015, a futuristic setting for its original 1995 audience. It follows Shinji Ikari, a young boy chosen to pilot the Evangelion, a humanoid weapon that stands as humanity’s last hope against enigmatic beings known as ‘Angels’ threatening Tokyo-3.
While specifics about the game’s platforms are still under wraps, we do know that players can look forward to an immersive adventure. The game promises to let players explore various environments while staying true to the show’s timeline and events. Along the way, players will complete missions and engage in thrilling battles.
A standout feature, according to Pixelity, will be the collaborative gameplay elements. Players will have the opportunity to interact with familiar characters from Evangelion, offering a rich experience that’s sure to captivate longstanding fans. Pixelity plans to deliver the kind of dynamic excitement you’d expect from the action-adventure genre.
Since its founding in 2017, Pixelity has made a name for itself with VR titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also in the midst of developing two more VR games, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
This isn’t Evangelion’s first foray into VR, but it’s definitely the first official at-home game adaptation. Back in 2017, a VR experience titled Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls was available at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan, courtesy of Bandai Namco’s VR studio, Project i Can. It was a temporary attraction restricted to that location, which makes this new game’s at-home availability all the more exciting for fans everywhere.
