It seems like the Minecraft movie is still chugging along on its box office journey, pulling in an additional $80 million in its second weekend in U.S. theaters. And that’s not even counting the ticket sales worldwide, which are still coming in strong across movie theaters everywhere.
According to Variety, the film is holding onto the number one spot at the box office. They mentioned that the $80 million brought in during the second weekend represents about a 50% drop in domestic sales compared to the $163 million it made during its premiere weekend. But, honestly, that kind of drop is pretty standard for new releases. In the grand scheme of things, losing 50% isn’t too bad when you look at historical data.
PBS Frontline points out that movies that only see a 30-40% drop after their opening week are generally considered box office successes. So, even though a 50% decrease sounds larger, the initial record-breaking performance of the Minecraft movie pretty much assures that it’s doing just fine commercially.
The movie’s success has even sparked a spike in people playing Minecraft again! Plus, it’s sparked a trend where kids and teens are going to the screenings and shouting “Chicken Jockey,” which really shows how the movie has embedded itself into today’s cultural conversation.
With this kind of success, talk of a sequel is already buzzing. It’s not really a surprise, but it does confirm that Minecraft’s presence in pop culture isn’t disappearing anytime soon.
