Ubisoft, the renowned French game publisher, seems to be gearing up for a new battle royale venture designed to compete with Apex Legends.
Insider reports suggest that the project, operating under the codename ‘Scout,’ bears striking similarities to Respawn and EA’s popular game. In fact, some of the game’s artwork reportedly served as a placeholder for Scout. Also, several character designs closely resemble those found in Apex Legends. The game has been quietly under development for quite a while now.
The rationale behind this move appears to be Ubisoft’s belief that they can attract Apex Legends players, especially given that Electronic Arts has acknowledged a dip in the game’s financial performance.
One insider pointed out, “The idea seems to be tapping into the player base of Apex Legends, which is showing a downward trend, and Ubisoft executives think there’s a good opportunity for another hero-based battle royale game.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first venture into the battle royale genre. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, though it was shut down just a year and a half later. The company also made headlines recently by discontinuing their free-to-play shooter XDefiant at the close of 2024.
As for Apex Legends, it’s gearing up for a new chapter with its 2.0 version, which is anticipated to roll out sometime after April 2026.
