The team at 2K Games’ motion-capture studio in California has officially decided to unionize. According to an announcement on the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) website, 15 workers voted in favor, while six opposed the move last Friday, November 22nd. The election was overseen by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
“Today, it’s clear that folks at the studio are genuinely looking out for not only their interests but also the well-being of their peers, the coming generations of workers, and the studio itself,” shared Matthew Peterson, an animator at 2K’s mocap studio.
While acknowledging the hurdles faced during the campaign, Peterson expressed his enthusiasm: “The heart behind this movement is truly driven by empathy for each other. I’m eager to begin fair negotiations with Take-Two, and I hope our example inspires others in the industry to organize and secure the protections necessary to not just survive, but to truly thrive.”
IATSE International president Matthew Loeb also weighed in, saying, “This win isn’t just a victory for one studio; it reflects a broader shift in the video game industry. The employees at 2K MoCap have illustrated a point that many entertainment workers are already familiar with—that coming together collectively offers the best chance to ensure fairness, equity, and respect in the workplace. Their bravery will undoubtedly motivate others in the industry to take similar steps. This result also highlights the power of workers exercising their right to organize, a right we will fiercely continue to support and expand.”
The motion to unionize at 2K’s motion-capture studio in California first took shape back in October.
