If you’ve been anywhere near the gaming world recently, you already know I’m not exactly thrilled by the horror genre. Sure, there are some horror settings I enjoy, but it’s those annoying jump scares that really get under my skin. Gaming, to me, is all about unwinding, not bracing for surprises that make you question your laundry preparedness. However, psychological horror? Now, that’s a level of eeriness I can appreciate. It gives you that right amount of unease without the underwear factor—it’s enough to make you pause and ponder. Enter “DEAD LETTER DEPT.,” the latest addition to the psychological horror scene, set to launch on your screens at the month’s end.
Come January 30th, DEAD LETTER DEPT. is going to land on Steam, and—boy, oh boy—the premise has certainly piqued my interest. In this spine-tingling adventure, you become a temp worker at a postal warehouse. Your task? Deal with the mountain of undelivered letters that, for a million odd reasons, have lost their way. Bad handwriting is possibly the least intriguing reason these dead letters find their way to you.
Once you dive into DEAD LETTER DEPT., your mission appears simple enough: retype the addresses on the misdirected mail. Basic data entry, right? Well, that’s the theory, until you start noticing eerie patterns among those seemingly random letters. It gradually dawns on you that some of these messages might just be targeting you.
You’re stationed in a bleak, isolated warehouse, with barely any contact with the outside world other than the stories you piece together from the letters in front of you. As the days go by, the work environment morphs into something more surreal and sinister. Are these letters pulling you into their sordid tales? Is someone, or something, lurking and watching your every move? The question looms: Is keeping up with the rent worth potentially losing your grip on reality?
DEAD LETTER DEPT. is not your average typing game. By entering prompts on your computer, you’ll start to uncover pieces of other people’s lives through their lost mail, revealing secrets that some might prefer stayed hidden. Each playthrough promises a fresh experience with a vast amount of letters to sift through. So, will the thrill of discovery outbalance the creepy vibe? Only you can decide.
If you’re intrigued by the notion of snooping through someone else’s mail, DEAD LETTER DEPT. will be available soon. Curious but hesitant to make the plunge? There’s a demo you can check out on Steam right now. But if you’re anything like me, patience for the full release is a virtue—you won’t have to wait long!
