In a surprising twist during today’s eagerly anticipated Switch 2 Direct presentation, Nintendo dropped a bombshell by unveiling their next big 3D platformer—a game where Mario takes a backseat, while another iconic character swings into the spotlight. Enter “Donkey Kong Bananza,” a title that cleverly highlights the beloved gorilla’s banana obsession. The initial footage seemed almost like it might be a follow-up to 2017’s “Super Mario Odyssey,” but as the dust settled, it became crystal clear: it was unquestionably time for Donkey Kong to shine.
In a world of vast open environments that remind us fondly of “Odyssey,” Donkey Kong embarks on his adventure, ready to smash and bash through fresh adversaries. Although Kremlins or King K. Rool didn’t make an appearance, I have a hunch Nintendo is holding onto these surprises for the next reveal. This initial glimpse put the spotlight on exploration and some cool mechanics. Donkey Kong now has the ability to drill into the ground, emerging in a different location entirely. On top of that, he can grab chunks of earth and cliffs to hurl at other structures, uncovering hidden treasures. Destruction is a major theme here, and just like Mario’s cap, Cappy, unlocked new possibilities, DK’s new powers seem poised to redefine gameplay. Forget booking a session at the local Anger Room; smashing anything in sight with DK’s fists seems far more satisfying.
A closer look at the trailer shows other compelling elements reminiscent of what made “Super Mario Odyssey” a hit. For example, a nostalgic Donkey Kong Country segment shifts to a classic 2D viewpoint, echoing “Odyssey’s” nods to the original Super Mario Bros. and its iconic Jump Up, Super Star scene in New Donk City. New foes bear a striking resemblance to the Broodals, with one enemy commandeering a floating rock, and DK has a new companion—a purple rock-like creature perched on his shoulders. The crescent-shaped clouds above Ingot Isle might remind fans of the moons Mario used to collect. Even the environments—a jungle-like underground start and flower-laden plains—had me wondering if we were witnessing “Super Mario Odyssey 2.” Yet, what we have here is something even more exciting to experience.
“Donkey Kong Bananza” represents a refreshing return for DK since “Donkey Kong 64.” The potential for growth and innovation in this new 3D installment is thrilling, making me eager to dive in. While the new features of the Switch 2 didn’t sweep me off my feet, “Bananza’s” embrace of “Odyssey’s” great mechanics hit the sweet spot for this Direct event. Given his recent roles in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, a theme park ride at Universal Studios, and this brand-new adventure ready for the Switch 2’s launch window, one thing is clear—Donkey Kong is making a strong comeback. And he’s here to stay.
