A fresh Gundam anime is on the horizon, and it’s bringing a powerhouse team featuring talents from both Pokémon and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Gundam has long been a cornerstone for mecha anime, and it’s no surprise that its latest iteration, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (apologies, I’m still figuring out the pronunciation), sees a blend of powerful creative forces. Spearheading this project is Sunrise, the original Gundam studio, in collaboration with Hideaki Anno’s Studio Khara. Anno himself is diving into the action, contributing as a storyboard artist and scriptwriter. Those familiar with Pokémon will also be delighted as the human character designs are in the capable hands of Take, renowned for crafting the gym leaders in Sword and Shield, Lusamine in Sun and Moon, and notable characters from Legends Arceus like Adaman and Irida.
But there’s more. Kazuya Tsurumaki, celebrated for his directorial work on the iconic series FLCL, is steering this ship. Evangelion’s own Ikuto Yamashita is designing the mecha, which already amps up the anticipation. Plus, Yoshimasa Terui, whose melodies accompanied Jujutsu Kaisen, is composing the music. Honestly, it feels like an all-star lineup. The official storyline shared on the website teases us with this: “Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student living in tranquility on a space colony. Her life takes a turn when she encounters Nyaan, a refugee of war. This fateful meeting leads her into the clandestine world of Clan Battle, a no-holds-barred mobile suit dueling sport. Entering under the alias ‘Machu,’ Amate battles relentlessly in the GQuuuuuuX, until a mysterious Gundam mobile suit—chased by both the space force and the police—appears, piloted by a boy named Shuji.”
While there’s no specific release date yet, fans can mark their calendars for January 17th, when a re-cut theatrical version of the episodes will hit cinemas in Japan. An English trailer hints at potential international release news, so keep your eyes peeled. It’s shaping up to be an epic addition to the Gundam legacy, so stay tuned!
