nDreams, the creative mind behind the frenetic free-to-play shooter FRENZIES, has announced that the game is set to graduate from early access later this year. However, contrary to previous expectations, it won’t be making its way to the PSVR 2 platform.
In a recent statement, the studio shared their excitement about future PS VR2 projects, even if FRENZIES isn’t part of that lineup. They said:
“We’re thrilled to confirm that when FRENZIES exits Early Access later this year, it will be free-to-play. Since its Early Access launch on Meta Quest, players have embraced FRENZIES’ unique chaos with enthusiasm. As we look toward the full release, we want to build on that positive momentum.
To ensure we’re delivering the best version of FRENZIES possible, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus our resources on the Meta Quest version and will not be releasing it on PS VR2 as planned. We understand this might be disappointing for those eager for a PS VR2 launch. Nonetheless, we have exciting news coming up for PS VR2 fans, so stay tuned!
In the meantime, look forward to more FRENZIES updates as we follow our Early Access roadmap in the weeks ahead.”
Launched in October 2024 for Quest 2 and newer devices, Frenzies offers quick-paced arena skirmishes with a variety of standard weapons and game modes, all engineered to provide a robust VR-native gaming experience.
Although PSVR 2 enthusiasts may feel left out, nDreams’ decision seems strategically sound for a number of reasons. Recently, Quest has enjoyed a surge in popularity among younger audiences, especially with the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S, which has in turn boosted the demand for free-to-play content on the platform.
As Meta VP of Metaverse Content Samantha Ryan noted in February, the era where developers relied almost solely on premium apps may be shifting, with free-to-play (F2P) becoming a more viable strategy. Nevertheless, she believes that premium and F2P models will continue to coexist.
Navigating today’s tough economic climate is also an issue. nDreams, looking to optimize its investments, has chosen to cater to its largest audience segment. Recently, the studio, stationed in the UK, restructured by merging nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio into a new entity known as ‘Compass’ amid a round of layoffs.
Despite these changes, nDreams remains a leader in the XR gaming sphere, consistently delivering top-tier VR experiences. Whether it’s through Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Synapse, Fracked, Little Cities, or Phantom: Cover Ops, their portfolio underscores their commitment to VR excellence.
