Sony has recently shared some fascinating PS Portal gameplay statistics that are putting skeptics in their place. Despite initial criticism, the company has consistently maintained that the PS Portal was crafted to enhance players’ interactions with the PS5. In a recent chat with GameFile, Sony emphasized how the handheld console is doing just that.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Hiromi Wakai spoke with Stephen Totilo from GameFile, revealing that PS Portal usage tends to spike around 9 p.m., just one hour after the PS5 sees its highest activity. The theory is that gamers, instead of turning off their TVs or letting someone else take over, simply switch to the PS Portal. This transition allows them to keep gaming without interruption, which aligns perfectly with the original goal of boosting PS5 user engagement.
Wakai further explained, “It turns out that PS Portal owners generally spend more time gaming compared to those without the device. Naturally, those who opted to buy the PS Portal might have been more engaged gamers from the start. However, our data clearly shows a higher gaming activity among these users.”
Previously, Sony described the PS Portal as a “huge” commercial triumph. The buzz around its sales has even sparked speculation that Sony might be reconsidering a foray into portable consoles.
