On Tuesday, NVIDIA announced a new step forward for gamers and tech enthusiasts alike: upcoming monitor scalers from MediaTek will be compatible with NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology. This collaboration means MediaTek will integrate the full spectrum of G-Sync’s advanced gaming features directly into future monitors, making them more accessible without needing a standalone G-Sync module.
Historically, G-Sync required a dedicated module—specifically, an Altera FPGA—to synchronize display refresh rates with GPUs, effectively reducing screen tearing, stutter, and input lag. To offer a more cost-effective solution, NVIDIA rolled out G-Sync Compatible certification in 2019. This approach leveraged VESA’s AdaptiveSync standard for variable refresh rates, providing a seal of approval that monitors with this certification aligned with NVIDIA’s performance criteria and worked seamlessly with their GPUs. Nevertheless, G-Sync Compatible monitors missed out on some high-end features that were exclusive to setups with the dedicated G-Sync module.
Now, the partnership with MediaTek revolutionizes this landscape. MediaTek will incorporate NVIDIA’s full G-Sync suite—including the cutting-edge G-Sync Pulsar—directly into their monitor scalers. G-Sync Pulsar raises the bar by enhancing motion clarity and significantly reducing ghosting, resulting in a smoother gaming experience. MediaTek-based G-Sync displays are set to support everything from variable refresh rates, Pulsar, variable overdrive, 12-bit color, and Ultra Low Motion Blur to low latency HDR and Reflex Analyzer. This innovation means more monitors can support the complete range of G-Sync features without the need for pricey FPGA hardware.
The first monitors showcasing this advancement are the AOC Agon Pro AG276QSG2, Acer Predator XB273U F5, and ASUS ROG Swift 360Hz PG27AQNR. These models are impressive, boasting 360Hz refresh rates, 1440p resolutions, and HDR support, proving to be prime examples of what this technology can offer.
What’s yet to be determined is precisely which of MediaTek’s scalers will include NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology—or whether this support will eventually extend to all of their scaler offerings. Additionally, it remains to be seen if NVIDIA’s dedicated G-Sync modules will continue to offer advantages over the MediaTek-scaled displays.
