Adaptations of video games into TV shows and movies are hardly new on the entertainment scene.
Over the years, countless video games have made their way to both the big screen and our personal streaming devices, resulting in a mix of cinematic triumphs and notable flops. And it doesn’t stop there—more are on the horizon, including projects based on hit games like BioShock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and plenty more.
In the spirit of enjoying the journey, I’ve taken on the task of ranking the very best game adaptations we’ve seen so far. Before anyone gets too upset with my choices ("How could you possibly think XYZ isn’t number one?!"), let me clarify something.
The entries on this list are all ones I genuinely recommend. We’re well past the era when a movie merely being entertaining with passable casting was enough. This is all about the elite, the undeniable standouts that demand your attention. So, without further ado, here are the top seven video game adaptations we’ve been treated to.
7. Dragon Age: Absolution
The Dragon Age series has had its share of twists and turns, and what was originally planned as a heist-focused game eventually emerged as a 2022 Netflix show titled Dragon Age: Absolution. This animated series brings together a diverse group of characters on a mission to steal a significant artifact from the Tevinter Imperium.
The show is a delightful blend of action and character-driven storytelling, with standout moments featuring characters like the whimsical Qwydion, voiced by Ashly Burch. However, it does have its limitations. Given that it’s a smaller slice of the expansive Dragon Age universe, it may feel a little daunting for newcomers. Still, if the intricacies of Templars, Blood Mages, and Demons pique your curiosity, it’s well worth diving in.
6. Sonic the Hedgehog
Remember the uproar over Sonic’s original live-action look? Well, that fiasco surprisingly led to one of the most consistent franchise adaptations to date. The Sonic the Hedgehog films and the accompanying Knuckles series balance fun and thrilling adventures perfectly, capturing all the frenetic energy you’d expect from this iconic character.
The success of these movies owes much to the drastic overhaul of Sonic’s animation, transforming him from a design disaster to an endearing hero reminiscent of the games. Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Dr. Robotnik also deserves praise for its spirited performance. The excitement continues with the upcoming third film, featuring the enigmatic Shadow the Hedgehog, brought to life by Keanu Reeves.
5. The Last of Us
Teaming up with HBO, PlayStation Productions and Naughty Dog delivered a faithful adaptation of The Last of Us, a story of survival set in a post-apocalyptic landscape. The series follows Joel and Ellie, portrayed by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, as they navigate a dangerous world.
While the show stays true to the game’s narrative, often following it closely, it shines brightest when it diverges from the game’s path. Notable additions include a suspenseful opening featuring John Hannah and a moving third episode focusing on the characters Bill and Frank. With the second season slated to tackle the events of The Last of Us Part 2 by 2025, and possible further seasons ahead, there’s a lot to look forward to.
4. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a masterpiece born from the collaboration between Studio Trigger and the Cyberpunk universe. This anime serves as a prequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and tells the tale of a street-smart kid and his crew, embroiled in high-stakes missions in a world dominated by corporate greed.
This series thrill rides you through a whirlwind of action before hitting you with its inevitable tragic conclusion. It’s a gripping narrative that, unfortunately, reminds us that survival is bleak in Night City.
3. Castlevania
Turning Castlevania into a hit animated series was no easy feat, yet Powerhouse Animation and Netflix crafted an exceptional adaptation. By concentrating on the Belmont family’s legendary monster-hunting legacy, the show presents compelling stories enriched with character development.
Castlevania’s mature themes, striking animation, stellar music, and top-notch voice acting make it a must-watch across all its seasons. Its sequel series, Castlevania: Nocturne, continues the saga during the chaotic backdrop of the French Revolution.
2. Fallout
When rumors of a Fallout series began circulating, skepticism was rampant. However, the collaboration between Kilter Films, Amazon MGM Studios, and Bethesda resulted in a series that nails the essence of the Fallout universe. It offers an entertaining look at a post-apocalyptic America with an original plot that fits neatly into the existing canon.
The story follows vault dweller Lucy, played by Ella Purnell, as she becomes entangled in a power struggle that could reshape the Wasteland. With a promised second season, fans have much to anticipate from this vibrant series.
1. Arcane
After years of development, Riot Games and Fortiche finally brought the animated world of League of Legends to life with Arcane. This epic tale of contrasts—between cities, families, and destinies—tells the captivating story of sisters Vi and Jinx amidst a beautifully animated backdrop.
Arcane’s storytelling, coupled with stellar animation and music, makes it accessible to both gamers and newcomers. It’s a genuine masterpiece, and while Riot explores further narratives within the Runeterra universe, it’s uncertain if we’ll ever witness something quite as groundbreaking as this again.
