Rec Room is packed with adventures you can dive into alongside friends or even strangers. Its latest addition, ‘Run the Block’, has just arrived, drawing inspiration from the beloved Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio, which first dazzled players back in 2000.
This new multiplayer mini-game officially launched on December 11th and has already caught the attention of over a million players. Much like Jet Set Radio, ‘Run the Block’ throws you into a vibrant urban landscape where up to ten players can race and pull off parkour stunts in tandem. Even without the iconic rollerblades from the original game, you can still expect to be sprinting, jumping, and grinding across sprawling lines that crisscross the map, all while leaving your mark with graffiti tags throughout the city.
Looking back at the past year, Rec Room hasn’t seen many first-party game releases, with ‘My Little Monster’, a pet farming simulator, being the most notable. Alongside introducing brand-related content to the platform—think avatar packs from Monster High and even elements from Bungie’s Destiny—Rec Room seems to have focused this year on enhancing its creator tools. This allows users not only to craft intricate worlds but also to develop and sell assets within the game’s thriving creator economy. Earlier this year, Rec Room also launched full-body avatars, adding yet more ways for players to customize their experience.
This all coincides with Rec Room’s recent debut on the Nintendo Switch in November, expanding its already extensive lineup of supported devices such as PC VR, all Quest headsets, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
