If you’ve been eagerly anticipating a new installment in the Starcraft series, it seems like your patience might soon be rewarded. Recent reports suggest that Nexon, the South Korean publisher known for games like The First Descendant and Dave the Diver, is teaming up with Blizzard to develop a new entry in the beloved sci-fi RTS franchise. It turns out Starcraft isn’t the only Blizzard series on Nexon’s radar—they’re also rumored to be involved with an ‘Overwatch Mobile’ project.
Earlier this year, Asia Today revealed that the Starcraft intellectual property was on the table. Four major gaming companies—Nexon, Netmarble, Krafton, and NCSoft—expressed interest in working on the next chapter of this iconic RTS series. Things went quiet for a while after that initial buzz.
Now, after months of silence, MTN is reporting that Nexon has clinched the deal, winning the bidding war to collaborate with Blizzard on new content within the Starcraft universe. Since the last major release, Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void in 2015, fans have been reminiscing and waiting for something fresh. Sure, Starcraft: Remastered came out in 2017, but there hasn’t been anything truly new.
MTN also mentions that some bids for Starcraft were open-ended regarding genre and content type, which means we might see Starcraft branching out beyond its traditional RTS roots. Only time will reveal what Nexon and Blizzard have in store for us.
Regarding Overwatch Mobile, it’s not quite what you might think. According to MTN, it’s being developed as a MOBA spinoff of the popular hero shooter. Nexon has reportedly secured the rights to distribute the game in Korea and Japan. As for what lies ahead for Starcraft, we’ll just have to be patient and see what unfolds.
