Last year, we were thrilled when Wizards of the Coast teamed up with Resolution Games to bring us some exciting news: Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), everyone’s favorite tabletop RPG, is making its way into the realm of virtual reality.
For months, this project was kept tightly under wraps, leaving us all eagerly speculating. But on Wednesday, the wait came to an end as the companies finally pulled back the curtain, revealing not only the official title but also some juicy details about what’s in store for this VR adventure.
The new game, christened Battlemarked, takes full advantage of Resolution Games’ Demeo system. This system creates a virtual tabletop setting and delivers gameplay that echoes the beloved D&D with its turn-based combat and a nifty action point system using playing cards.
Battlemarked is noteworthy for being the maiden collaboration between Resolution Games and Wizards of the Coast. As a result, it’s set to offer an experience that feels more like authentic D&D than Demeo. However, a key difference is that Battlemarked won’t require a Dungeon Master. Instead, players will focus on strategic thinking and making impactful decisions, taking a step back from traditional role-playing elements.
At its launch, Battlemarked will roll out with two narrative-driven campaigns, designed for up to four players to dive into together. The game is set to be accessible on multiple platforms, including VR, PC, and consoles. While a definitive list of supported devices hasn’t been disclosed yet, we know that Demeo supports Meta Quest, Pico, SteamVR, PlayStation VR2, PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, and iPad, which might hint at where Battlemarked will appear.
Accompanying the announcement, we were treated to a fresh trailer. It showcases that signature art style from Wizards of the Coast, and gives us a glimpse of the exciting classes and races to expect, like the fighter Dragonborn and rogue Tiefling, among others.
There are still plenty of mysteries surrounding Battlemarked. We’re yet to learn the release date and pricing, and the specifics of the campaigns remain under wraps. However, Resolution Games has hinted that they are planning to roll out more campaigns in “different D&D settings” down the line. When we reached out for more information, they chose to remain tight-lipped.
Resolution Games, hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, has been creating games for over a decade. They’ve produced a range of titles, including Angry Birds: Isle of Pigs, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, and Spatial Ops. They’ve also secured about $38.6 million in funding, based on data from PitchBook.
This latest announcement is a testament to D&D’s increasing mainstream popularity. The franchise has grown beyond the game table into a multimedia giant, with hit web series like Critical Role and Dimension 20, video games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios, and even a film on the big screen, “Honor Among Thieves.”
