Valve’s Index headset has been a dominant force in the realm of PC VR for a good few years. But as we approach 2025, you might be wondering if this now nearly six-year-old piece of tech still holds up. Let’s dive into whether or not the Index remains a viable option.
### Is Valve Index Still Worth Your Money in 2025?
Having relied on the Valve Index as my go-to gear for PC VR over the past few years, I have to admit that it’s a tough sell in 2025, especially at its original full kit price of $1,000. While it does shine with unique features—like its top-notch headphones—there are some drawbacks. The hefty price tag, bulky design, and aging technology make it a less appealing choice for most new buyers.
For gamers on the hunt for an exceptional PC VR experience, the Quest 3 emerges as a standout choice. It’s not only more affordable but also user-friendly and visually stunning. Quest 3 boasts the clearest lenses available, offering a remarkable sweet spot. Its resolution surpasses the Index, and the inside-out tracking system simplifies the setup process since there’s no need for external beacons, unlike the Index. If you’re going this route, consider upgrading the head strap. Opt for something like the ANNAPRO Battery Head Strap, which adds comfort and includes a built-in battery for better balance and extended playtime.
A significant plus with the Quest 3 is that it’s completely wireless for PC VR gaming. Using Valve’s Steam Link app, you can seamlessly dive into your SteamVR library without being tethered. This bypasses Meta’s Quest Link, providing a streamlined experience. Added to that, the Quest 3 functions as a standalone headset. For games where graphics are not the priority, it’s perfect for portable gaming sessions.
However, if you decide on the Quest 3, ensure your network setup is top-notch for a smooth wireless experience. Connect your gaming PC to the router via Ethernet for the best results. Your router should be at least Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), but upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) is ideal. If you’re considering a router upgrade, this is a good time to ensure your setup is ready for wireless VR. Keep the router in the same room or nearby to help maintain a strong connection.
