Hey everyone, I’m Yonghe Wang, the Creative Director at Pollard Studios, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to finally tell you that Karma: The Dark World is hitting PlayStation 5 on March 27, with enhanced features for the PS5 Pro. Together with our publisher, Wired Productions, we’ve worked hard to make this announcement a reality.
To mark this special occasion, we’re giving you a glimpse into how our team has harnessed the PS5 Pro’s power to boost the game’s visuals and performance. Plus, we’re releasing the second trailer in our trilogy, which offers a peek into the game’s strange landscapes and intriguing characters. These elements hint at the complex relationships you, as the player, will explore. Enjoy the journey!
What Is Karma: The Dark World?
Karma: The Dark World immerses you in a first-person, cinematic psychological thriller set in an alternate timeline where a cassette-fueled future unfolds after World War II. In this universe, a corporation named Leviathan has secured mind-boggling technology to seize control of Eastern Germany, establishing an oppressive regime that worships productivity and compliance as sacred.
Their control is exerted through tight surveillance, mind-bending substances, and a covert group known as the Nightcrawlers. These elite ROAM Agents are empowered to inspect crime scenes, interrogate citizens, and perform Mind Dives—allowing them to plunge into people’s memories. Within these memories, agents search for truth, confronting painful pasts and distorted emotions.
You step into the shoes of Daniel McGovern, a ROAM agent tasked with investigating a theft at a Leviathan facility. This mission quickly unravels into an exploration of love, compassion, and the intricate layers of morality.
Crafting the Dark World
For me, creating a game is a deep conversation with the human spirit, transcending traditional media like books or films. Our goal is to weave philosophical elements into the game, which is evident in its very title. With Karma, cause and effect are intricately linked, with each interaction and moment building a complex world.
Through this game, we aim to challenge conventional storytelling, offering an experience that both entertains and encourages introspection. Karma isn’t just a digital adventure—it’s a reflection of our reality, urging players to seek answers within themselves.
Our team uses dramatic lighting and vivid colors to create an experience that merges realism with the surreal. We draw inspiration from the atmospheric style of games like Alan Wake and Control by Remedy, and the abstract storytelling of the late David Lynch. His works—such as Twin Peaks and Eraserhead—have left a lasting impact on us and influence our game’s design. Our mission is to create something hauntingly beautiful that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.
