Get ready for a journey like no other with The Midnight Walk, launching on PSVR 2 and PC VR on May 8th. This adventurous experience brings a quirky twist with intricately crafted clay models digitally rendered into the game’s immersive world.
MoonHood, the Swedish studio composed of developers who worked on Lost in Random and Ghost Giant, offered GameSpot an engaging 30-minute sneak peek of the non-VR version of The Midnight Walk. Check out the hands-on experience right here:
Stepping into the game, you become ‘The Burnt One’, a mysterious character with a forgotten past. Emerging from a tunnel and handed a new pair of eyes, you venture into a peculiar realm reminiscent of stop-motion clay animation.
"Sound plays a vital role," explains MoonHood CEO Klaus Lyngeled, as he demonstrates how players use virtual ears to amplify their in-game hearing. He adds, “It’s all about binaural audio here.”
MoonHood boasts a collection of over 700 models back at their studio, made from clay, papier-mâché, and even physical books. These were meticulously 3D scanned to shape the environment and characters you’ll encounter.
In the hands-on session, MoonHood showcases a unique eye-closing mechanic that enhances auditory perception in the non-VR version. Initially designed for PSVR 2, which utilizes eye-tracking technology, this feature doubles as a strategic tool for defeating certain foes.
During the preview, we also explored some intriguing puzzles, involving lighting candles with limited matches to unlock new paths. The game further enriches its narrative through ‘shell-phone’ audio notes players can discover.
Combat in The Midnight Walk deviates from the typical shoot-and-slash mode; here, you must cleverly distract and outwit adversaries using the surroundings. While it’s dubbed a “cozy horror game,” anticipate some well-timed jump scares, balanced by safe zones for a breather.
Though we await detailed VR gameplay experiences, you can find The Midnight Walk available for pre-order on the PlayStation Store for PSVR 2 and on Steam for PC VR. Mark your calendars for a May 8th release and a price of $40.
