Rumors have been swirling about Ubisoft’s latest project, ‘Alterra,’ which is speculated to be a voxel-based social simulation game reminiscent of Animal Crossing. There’s already a strong lineup of games like Stardew Valley, Coral Island, and Castaway Paradise that capture the Animal Crossing experience on Xbox, so Ubisoft will face stiff competition in this arena.
Insider Gaming has shared that Alterra combines the charm of Animal Crossing with the mechanics of Minecraft. Imagine an island getaway where you’re surrounded by quirky, Funko Pop-style characters known as Matterlings. Ubisoft is said to be incorporating Minecraft-inspired building tools, allowing players to craft their own ideal island retreats.
Players won’t just be anchored to their islands, though. Reports suggest that Alterra will let us venture into diverse worlds, each designed with unique biomes, to gather materials needed for our island creations. Each world presents themed environments populated by Matterlings, enemies, and resources, all crafted to reflect their respective biomes.
The plan, according to the insider, includes introducing new Matterlings throughout the game’s lifespan. Different species will boast various outfits and appearances. Social interaction with other players is hinted at, though details on multiplayer features are still vague. Could we possibly explore our friends’ worlds together?
Interestingly, Alterra originates from a previously canceled voxel project and has been under development for the past 18 months at Ubisoft Montreal. The development team is notably led by Patrick Redding, renowned for his work on Gotham Knights, and Ubisoft veteran Fabien Lhéraud, who is serving as the lead producer.
Meanwhile, in other Ubisoft news, fans are buzzing with anticipation over the new stealth elements in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. But what about these whispers of Alterra? We’re curious to hear your thoughts on Ubisoft venturing into the realm of social sims. Share your opinions in the comments!
